It could be a sweep, a submission, or even just maintaining a position. Put yourself in those situations during training, limit your focus to that area, and commit to exploring it. This will slow things down, help you notice details, and allow you to see how a move can be used to set up, counter, or flow into the next step. At first, it may feel frustrating—but once you start hitting that move, it becomes part of your arsenal. Then, move on to something new.

Another trick is to change how you start your rolls.

Even a small shift—like beginning from guard instead of fighting for top position—can refresh your training and break up predictability. This ties back to staying intentional: every change gives you a new perspective to learn from.

And most importantly: remember that winning and losing doesn’t exist in the training room.

Training is for experimenting, failing, refining, and learning. Winning is saved for competition.
