UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU JOURNEY:

What does a Stripe Mean?

What a Stripe Really Means in Your Child’s Jiu-Jitsu Journey

As parents, we all love seeing our kids succeed. Whether it’s bringing home a good grade, scoring a point in a game, or learning something new, those little wins mean the world. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, progress doesn’t always show up as a brand-new belt—it often comes in the form of something smaller, but just as important: a stripe.

Stripes Are Milestones

Every belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has four stripes, and each one represents progress. Sometimes that progress is mastering a move from the curriculum. Other times it’s showing respect in class, following the rules, or simply understanding the objectives of a lesson. In other words, a stripe is more than tape on a belt—it’s proof that your child is growing, step by step.

When Do Kids Earn Them?

Stripes aren’t handed out every class, and they’re not tied to a rigid timeline. Instead, we award them during our Open Practice Days—a time for parents to watch their kids train and see how far they’ve come. Belt tests will still be part of the journey, but stripes are those little moments along the way that remind your child (and you!) that they’re moving forward.

Why It’s Different in Jiu-Jitsu?

Unlike other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about quick promotions. Kids can’t even earn a black belt until they’re at least 18. That means this is a long journey, and stripes help keep them motivated while reinforcing the idea that growth is steady, not instant.

Celebrate—Don’t Compare

When your child earns a stripe, celebrate it! They’ve worked hard, and it’s a big deal. If they don’t get one right away, it doesn’t mean they’re behind or failing. Every child learns at their own pace. The best thing you can do is encourage them to stay consistent, keep showing up, and lean into the core values we teach on the mats —discipline, respect, honesty, and perseverance.

The Bigger Picture

In the end, stripes are about progress, not perfection. They’re reminders that your child is growing, learning, and sticking with something that will serve them for life. So when they come running up to you with a new stripe on their belt, know that it’s worth celebrating—because it means they’re on the right path.
