What a Blue Belt Really Means at Mavericks BJJ

Coach’s Corner: What Is a Blue Belt?

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the blue belt is often misunderstood. Some people see it as the “real start” of Jiu-Jitsu — but at Mavericks, we see it as the result of doing the most important work first.

The white belt phase is the foundation of everything. This is where students learn essential positions, core escapes, basic attacks, and—most importantly—how to survive, move, and think on the mat. It’s where habits are built, awareness is developed, and confidence begins to take shape.

At Mavericks, we believe fundamentals should work on anyone — regardless of size, age, strength, or athleticism. They are designed to be reliable, efficient, and repeatable. As physical attributes change over time, fundamentals are what students naturally fall back on when speed, strength, or explosiveness decline.

Earning a blue belt at Mavericks means a student has developed consistent competency in those fundamentals. They can demonstrate understanding of key positions, apply escapes under pressure, execute basic attacks with control, and make sound decisions during live training. It’s not about collecting techniques — it’s about reliability, composure, and understanding why things work.

Once that foundation is solid, that’s when the “fun” part really begins.

From blue belt forward, students start exploring variations, transitions, chaining techniques together, and developing their own style. Concepts like timing, setups, combinations, and flow come into play. The game opens up — but only because the base is strong.

At Mavericks, the blue belt isn’t rushed, and it isn’t given lightly. It’s a sign that a student has done the work, respected the process, and built a foundation they can rely on for years to come.

Strong foundations build confident Jiu-Jitsu.
