Do you ever feel like you’re not making progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training—or that your improvement has slowed down compared to when you first started? You’re not alone. The good news is there’s a simple strategy that can help: roll with purpose and intent.
It could be a sweep, a submission, or even just maintaining a position. Put yourself in those situations during training, limit your focus to that area, and commit to exploring it. This will slow things down, help you notice details, and allow you to see how a move can be used to set up, counter, or flow into the next step. At first, it may feel frustrating—but once you start hitting that move, it becomes part of your arsenal. Then, move on to something new.
Even a small shift—like beginning from guard instead of fighting for top position—can refresh your training and break up predictability. This ties back to staying intentional: every change gives you a new perspective to learn from.
Training is for experimenting, failing, refining, and learning. Winning is saved for competition.
So the next time you hit a slump in your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, pick a focus for the week or switch up how you start your rolls. Let your training flow, and watch how much progress comes back into focus.
